Core aeration works best when the soil is moist from rain or irrigation. If your lawn is dry it would be wise to water prior to aeration otherwise the machine will just bounce around on the top of the soil as if aerating concrete.
We prefer to use a walk behind core aeration machine because the lawn is less likely to get torn up as you sometimes will find with a riding aerator. We also find that with a walk behind aerating machine the core path is more easily controlled which helps to minimize missed spots. On larger properties, of a acre or more, it is more cost effective to use a riding core aeration machine.
Prior to core aeration it is important to properly prepare your lawn. This includes cleaning up leaves, sticks and grass clumps from mowing. The closer you can mow the lawn, without damaging the existing grass, the better. When the lawn is left tall it will be difficult to see the cores as they may break apart during aeration or may not pull out at all as in some cases with thick Zoysia lawns.
If you are thinking about over seeding your lawn with Fescue, core aeration is a great start. Core aeration will give your new seeds a great seed to soil contact for help with germination. We do not recommend seeding with Bermuda seed or Zoysia seed. These lawns are best installed with sod. It is important to keep leaves cleaned off your newly seeded Fescue lawn and to water frequently for best germination results.
